ZENON Plech, one of Poland’s best-known riders, has died at the age of 67.
The former World No. 2 was best known in Britain for his time with Hackney and also wore the colours of Sheffield. He finished third in the 1973 World Final at Katowice behind his fellow countryman Jerzy Szczakiel and Ivan Mauger, and was runner-up to Mauger in 1979 when the Kiwi clinched his sixth and final world title at the same stadium. Plech’s former Hackney promoter Len Silver said: “The devastating news of the death of Zenon has hit me very hard. He brought huge pleasure into my life.” • We will carry a full tribute to Zenon Plech in next week’s Speedway Star.
