THE planned first Grand Prix of the season in Italy is off.
Terenzano’s Olimpia Stadium was due to open this year’s SGP series on April 24 but has been called off due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. A statement released on Monday read: ‘Due to the ongoing impacts of Covid-19 in Italy, the FIM, BSI, FMI and Moto Club Olimpia have decided to cancel the 2021 Italian FIM Speedway Grand Prix, scheduled to take place at the Olimpia Stadium on April 24, 2021. “While we are disappointed we won’t be able to make our Grand Prix return to Italy this year, we know this is the best decision for our riders and the fans,” stated Paul Bellamy, Senior Vice President of Motorsports Events at IMG. “We look forward to welcoming fans back to future events throughout the SGP season.”’ The decision means World Champion Bartosz Zmarzlik (pictured) will now begin the defence of his title in Germany on May 22.
