FORMER World No. 2 Gordon Kennett has died at the age of 70.
Kennett finished runner-up to Ole Olsen in the 1978 World Final at Wembley whilst on the books of British League White City. He began his career at Eastbourne in 1970 and had three separate spells in Eagles colours, becoming their all-time top scorer. He also raced for Oxford, Wimbledon and Wolverhampton, finally retiring after the 1993 season. In addition to his silver medal in the ’78 World Final, Kennett also won an FIM gold medal that year with partner Malcolm Simmons in the World Pairs’ Championship. • We will have a full tribute to Gordon in our obituaries column in Speedway Star in the w/e September 30 edition.
