SAVE Coventry Speedway campaigners are celebrating the verdict of a Public Inquiry, which has dismissed an appeal by the owners of Brandon Stadium over the refusal to grant planning permission for redevelopment of the site.
Brandon Estates wanted to demolish the stadium, which closed to motorsport in 2016, and replace it with a development to provide 124 dwellings accompanied by a 3G football pitch and associated pavilion. After a long-running legal battle, Inspector, Helen Hockenhull concluded that the stadium with its established use is not surplus to requirements, and that the ‘benefits’ of the alternative provision do not outweigh the loss of the stadium. In a statement, the Save Coventry Speedway & Stox Campaign Group (SCS) said: “Our dream has always been to get speedway and stock car racing back to their rightful place at Brandon, and following this decision that dream is still very much alive.”
