DAN Bewley ended the season on a high with victory in the British Under-21 Championship at Berwick on Wednesday night.
The Belle Vue rider raced to a 15-point maximum at Shielfield Park and took the title when the meeting had to be halted following Heat 20. A delayed start because of power issues forced the cancellation of the semi-final and final. Berwick’s Leon Flint, who dropped his only point to Bewley, finished as runner-up with Anders Rowe of Swindon and Somerset in third. Bewley said afterwards: “It’s more of a relief than anything, you’re only one bad start away from missing it, and there’s quite a lot of pressure. “But I’m happy to get the job done and I had one quite interesting race there with Leon as well. I did most of it from the front, but I did one from behind, and I’m just relieved now. “It would be good to get the senior one now to complete the set. I’ve been close, but this was a tough one because it was my last chance – but the senior one is probably less pressure because you’ve always got another year.” • Full coverage in next week’s Speedway Star.
