BRITAIN’S Robert Lambert claimed his first Grand Prix victory in Vojens on Saturday – on a night when Bartosz Zmarzlik secured the world title for a fifth time.
Lambert led the round 10 final from start to finish ahead of Zmarzlik, Maciej Janowski and Andzejs Lebedevs for his maiden SGP win but with Fredrik Lindgren, second in the standings at the start of the evening, enduring a miserable night in Denmark, Zmarzlik’s 18-point haul for following Lambert home moved him into an unassailable 22-point lead ahead of the last round in Torun. It means the Pole is now tied on five World Championship wins with Sweden’s Ove Fundin, just one short of Ivan Mauger and Tony Rickardsson on six. He becomes only the second rider in speedway history to be crowned World No. 1 three years in a row, matching Mauger (1968-70). “I am still young. I am 29 years old, and I always want the title next year. But of course, a lot of other riders want to win this,” said Zmarzlik. “Today was one example – big congratulations to Robert [Lambert]. It was his first time winning a Speedway GP round. I know the feeling and I say to him that the first time is always the best feeling.” • Don’t miss this week’s Speedway Star for full coverage from Vojens.
